5 Steps to Advocate for Yourself in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a life-changing experience that comes with its share of challenges and uncertainties. Advocating for yourself during this time is essential for ensuring you and your baby receive the best possible care.

Here are five practical steps to help you take charge of your pregnancy journey:

1. Educate Yourself

Knowledge is power. Take time to learn about your pre-existing conditions, your body's normal, your baby’s development, and what to expect during each stage of pregnancy. Familiarize yourself with key topics like urgent maternal warning signs, fetal movement, and routine tests. Our website offers valuable information to help you feel empowered.

2. Build a Supportive Care Team

Choose healthcare providers who respect your concerns and listen to your needs. If something feels off, don’t hesitate to seek a second opinion or switch providers. A supportive care team makes all the difference in ensuring your voice is heard and your health is prioritized. You may also want to consider hiring a doula who can help you advocate and offer physical support during labor as well as potentially improve your birth outcome and experience. No matter who you decide to have on your team, make sure you feel heard and well cared for.

3. Track Fetal Movements

Your baby’s movements are one of the best indicators of their well-being. Learn their patterns and note any changes (begin counting kicks after 26 weeks gestation. Learn how here). Count the Kicks has a free APP you can download to help track fetal movement effectively. If you notice reduced, frantic or abnormal movement, trust your instincts and reach out to your provider immediately. Please don't waste time, get to Labor and Delivery ASAP in case intervention is needed.

4. Ask Questions and Speak Up

Never hesitate to ask your provider questions about your care, test results, or treatment plans. If something isn’t clear, ask for an explanation. Remember, your concerns are valid, and you have the right to be fully informed about your health and your baby’s health. Read our questions to ask your provider list and get the conversation going about your pregnancy.

5. Lean on Your Support System

Advocating for yourself doesn’t mean doing it alone. Lean on your partner, family, or friends for emotional support. Share your concerns and ask for help when needed. Connecting with other parents, especially those who have experienced similar challenges, can also provide reassurance and guidance. If you're going through Pregnancy After Loss, read our PAL guide and find support through our partner org. Pregnancy After Loss Support's community.

Self-advocacy during pregnancy is about trusting yourself and ensuring your concerns are addressed. By educating yourself, surrounding yourself with supportive providers, and staying attuned to your baby’s needs, you can navigate this journey with confidence.
